Unhappy with hostel life, 13-year-old sets fire to madrasah

A 13-YEAR-OLD set fire to two blocks of a madrasah (Islamic school), because he didn’t want to study and stay in the hostel, Harian Metro reported.

The suspect has been arrested to assist in investigations following a police report.

During the incident, the suspect was said to have burnt a guest house and a lecture room.

Police picked up the suspect in front of a madrasah in Kampung Kubuk Perah, Wakaf Tapai in Terengganu.

Papers, a lighter and white plastic bucket containing liquid, suspected to be petrol, were also seized.

Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Marzukhi Mohd Mokhtar said a urine test on the suspect came back negative for drugs.

He said investigation would be carried out under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire.

Saripah Arabiah Che Embong, 61, said her nine-year-old grandson Ahmad Benyamin Abdullah’s mother Khairulnisa Mohd Yusoff, 31, is also a disabled.

Due to Khairulnisa’s condition, she is not able to take care of her son who needs full-time care.

Saripah said she is willing to take care of Ahmad Benyamin but finds its especially tough during bath time as they do not have a wheelchair. According to her, she has been receiving RM500 per month from the Welfare Department and special milk from the Terengganu Islamic Religion and Malay Customs Council.

“I always pray to stay healthy so that I can take care of my special grandson,” she said.

“I want to participate in action dramas or films which highlight the strength of women as there are not many characters like this in Malaysia,” said the 27-year-old.

“We seldom talk about the strength of women but always focus on ill-treated women. I hope my dream comes true one day,” she said.
