Homeless woman dies after being hit by minibus in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: A homeless woman in her 30s died after she was hit by a minibus in Tawau.

The accident happened at 9.55am on Tuesday (Aug 9) when the victim was crossing the road at a roundabout on Jalan Persisiran, according to Tawau police.

The minibus, driven by a 34-year-old man, was headed towards the Sabindo bus terminal when the incident occurred.

“Upon reaching the roundabout, the pedestrian suddenly crossed the road and the driver could not avoid hitting her,” he said, adding that she died at the scene.

“The minibus was not carrying any passengers during the incident.

“Further investigation found the victim did not possess documentation and was homeless,” said Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin.

The post-mortem conducted and ruled that the cause of death was a head injury sustained during the collision.

The police are continuing their investigations under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death due to reckless driving.
