Back in mid-April, we provided the first look at the second generation unifi Plux Box (UPB) after we discovered it was on display at the TMpoint in Menara TM, Bangsar. As it turns out, consumers are now finally able to get their hands on the new box which runs on Android TV.
For starters, TM has quietly updated the UPB section on unifi’s website to feature the new box although we have no idea when this took place. At the same time, the company has also updated the FAQ document for UPB [pdf] to include rudimentary information regarding the second generation UPB.
In the document, TM said that the second generation UPB was made available to consumers starting on 1 May. The same document has also confirmed its ability to deliver content via Wi-Fi and a dedicated VLAN connection.
The dedicated VLAN method was previously used for the older HyppTV set top boxes but not in the first generation UPB even though it still has a LAN port. Since the UPB does not rely on a dedicated VLAN, this allows it to be used on any ISP but the output can be affected by the quality of the connection itself since the content is not being delivered through a dedicated pipeline.
When it comes to service offerings, the document noted that they are still similar to the first generation UPB. So, it is likely that you will not be able to install Netflix into the second generation UPB just yet despite what has been listed in the specs sheet by Skyworth, who was the manufacturer of the new box.
For owners of previous HyppTV STBs or the first generation UPB, they can obtain the new box by having it as an add-on to their existing subscription. This option would cost them RM20 per month and there is also a 24-month contract attached to it.
As for new customers, the majority of the unifi Home plans are bundled together with UPB. Based on our quick check at unifi’s website, these plans currently cost as low as RM119 per month for 30Mbps and can go all the way up to RM349 per month if you prefer to have the 800Mbps option.
