The attempt to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump – Kennedy Center was a blatant overstep. It was a political stunt by Trump’s allies on the Board of Trustees, disregarding the historical and cultural significance of the center.
Officially, the Board of Trustees voted “unanimously” in December to rename the center. But the real intention was to further Trump’s personal brand. Congress had designated the Kennedy Center as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy, and only Congress has the right to change its name. This move by the board was a clear violation of Congress’s mandate.
The federal judge’s decision to order the restoration of the original name shows that the rule of law still holds. However, the internal memo from the center’s Office of General Counsel disputing the judge’s ruling on keeping the center open during renovations is a sign of continued resistance.
The removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center is a victory for the rule of law. It also shows that there are checks and balances against Trump’s efforts to reshape the federal government and D.C. life. But the ongoing disputes suggest that the battle for the center’s future is far from over.
