Fujifilm has introduced the Instax SQ40, the latest addition to its SQ series of instant cameras. Much like its predecessors, the newer model supports the 62 x 62mm Instax Square film, which is significantly larger than the Instax Mini format.

In terms of design, the new Instax SQ40 strays away from the usual vibrant, plastic designs of past SQ models. Instead, it features a black faux leather body with silver accents, which may have been inspired by the Instax Mini Evo from 2021. And it is by no means a tiny device, as it measures at 134.2mm wide, 120.2mm tall, and 60.5mm thick.

Situated in front of the camera is a retractable 65.75mm with a selfie mirror, while on the body itself is a shutter button on the left and a flash unit on the right. Found on both sides are eyelets for the included shoulder strap, whereas on the back is the film compartment, a shot counter, an optical viewfinder, and an integrated battery compartment. In regards to the latter, the new shooter accepts two lithium CR2 batteries.

Features-wise, the Fujifilm Instax SQ40 comes with a Macro Mode that lets you shoot selfies between 11.9 and 19.7 inches, as well as automatic exposure control (ISO 800) with flash which enables for bright photos in low-light conditions. We should also point out that the camera is as analogue as it gets, so advanced functions such as Bluetooth connectivity or even image storage are pretty much nonexistent. In fact, changing between off, regular, and macro modes are done by turning the ring that surrounds the lens.

Alongside the new camera, Fujfilm also launched the new “Sunset” film variety for its Instax Square film. Essentially, this version features pastel shaded borders which the company describes are “reminiscent of a serene, peaceful sunset”. Fancy copywriting aside, it would sure make your photos stand out when stuck on your fridge or an album.

The all-new Fujifilm SQ40 will be available for purchase in the US and other select regions by the end of June 2023. It is only available in black, and is priced at US$150 (~RM693). The company has yet to confirm whether the camera is expected to see a release in Malaysia.
